5.3 quake jolts Ilocos, Cagayan

MANILA, Philippines - A magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolted Ilocos Norte and Cagayan around 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Intensity 5 was felt in Calayan, Cagayan while Intensity 3 was felt in Claveria, Cagayan. Intensity 2 was felt in Laoag City and Batac City, Ilocos Norte.
Meanwhile, a 3.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) in Surigao City around 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Hong Kong doctor charged with faking appointments

HONG KONG - A Hong Kong doctor has been charged in court after he allegedly made up consultation appointments to make it look like he had a full schedule, a report said Tuesday.
Michael Ho, 46, was charged with misconduct in office and fraud after faking 33 appointments using the names of relatives and patients between 2007 and 2008 so he did not have to take walk-in patients, the South China Morning Post said.
Ho -- who pleaded not guilty to the charges -- allegedly used the names of his father, mother and son to make 16 false public hospital appointments when his parents were out of town and his son was at school, according to the Post.

Wesley So leads PH team in Asian Cities Chess

MANILA, Philippines – Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So will lead one of the two Philippine squads competing in the Asian Cities chess team championships in Jakarta, Indonesia starting on Good Friday (April 22).
This was announced yesterday by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) President Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr.
“The NCFP is fielding two talent-laden teams to the Asian Cities championship as part of our program to improve our standings in the world chess hierarchy,” said Pichay.

2.8-M Cebu Pacific Passengers Flies in Q1, upto 12%

MANILA, Philippines - Budget carrier Cebu Pacific flew over 2.8 million passengers in the first 3 months of the year, a 12% growth from last year.
"We attribute this first quarter growth to flight frequency increases to key international markets, brought about by the additional capacity from our brand new Airbus A320," Candice Iyog, Cebu Pacific vice president for marketing and distribution, said in a statement.

Thailand vigilance in south after attacks

BANGKOK, Thailand - Thailand on Tuesday urged authorities in its insurgency-ridden southern provinces to step up security surveillance after a string of deadly attacks in the region.
In the latest incident, a paramilitary soldier and two teenage suspected Islamic militants were killed late on Monday in a gun battle following an ambush on an army outpost in Pattani province, local police said.
Hours earlier a car bomb exploded in the main city in neighbouring Yala province, leaving one army ranger dead and 23 other people wounded, including civilians.
